The Traditional Approach to Lactation

  • In traditional Chinese theory, breast milk is formed from blood and body fluids, and its flow is influenced by energy (qi), warmth, digestion and circulation.

  • Red dates and longan are traditionally used to help nourish blood and body fluids. Astragalus and Codonopsis tonify qi and support energy levels for breastfeeding mothers. In some blends, small amounts of fenugreek, long used in Ayurvedic and Western herbal traditions, are included for its galactagogue qualities.

What is Confinement?

In many Asian cultures, the month after childbirth is known as “confinement” (zuò yuè zi, “sitting the month”), a sacred window of rest, warmth, and deeply nourishing food to support recovery and renewal.

Childbirth leaves the body open, depleted, and vulnerable, yet uniquely receptive to restoration. The way a mother is cared for in the first 30 days is believed to influence her well-being for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lactation tea, and is it different from confinement tea?

Lactation tea, also called breastfeeding tea or nursing tea, is herbal tea that mothers drink while breastfeeding. Many come as tea bags. Ours is a lactation tea and a confinement tea in one. It follows traditional Chinese confinement principles for recovery after birth, and the blends focus on herbs long used for lactation, such as fenugreek, alongside red dates and longan. So it does the job of a confinement tea and also supports milk flow for breastfeeding mothers. The herbs are whole and dried, portioned for each day and sipped warm through the day. It is caffeine-free.

How do I choose the right tea package?

We offer tea packs for 20 and 30 days, so you can choose what suits your recovery, budget and lifestyle.

  • 20-day pack: a balanced option for most of the confinement month
  • 30-day pack: covers the full traditional confinement month, at the lowest cost per day

What is included in the Confinement Tea Pack?

Each Confinement Tea Pack includes individually packed servings of dried tea herbs, enough for multiple servings per day. The pack features three distinct blends, based on red dates, longan and other traditional herbs commonly used in Chinese postpartum care to support breastfeeding. You can alternate the three blends daily for variety and balanced support.

Simple brewing instructions are included with each pack.

Are these teas safe during breastfeeding?

Yes, all ingredients are chosen with breastfeeding mothers in mind. They are caffeine-free and free from artificial additives. If you or the baby shows signs of sensitivity, you may pause and consult your practitioner.

Can I drink this if I had a C-section?

Yes. Our teas are designed to be gentle and supportive, whether you had a vaginal birth or a C-section. The herbs used are considered tea herbs and not medicinal herbs.

When should I start drinking the tea?

You can begin drinking the tea from Day 1 after childbirth.

Whether you start right away or a few days later, you’ll still enjoy the full nourishing benefits of the teas throughout your recovery.

How often should I drink it?

Most mothers drink 2 to 3 cups daily. Each pack yields approximately 600ml to 1L, suitable for 2 to 4 servings. You may sip it throughout the day, warm or at room temperature.

Can I add sweeteners or other ingredients?

The tea is naturally sweet and does not contain added sugar. You may add a slice of ginger for warmth or a small amount of rock sugar if desired, but we recommend keeping additives minimal.

How to store the tea packs?

To maintain the freshness and quality of your premium herbal products, please store them with care:

  • Keep herbal packs in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, heat, or humidity
  • For best results, you may also store them in the refrigerator
  • Avoid exposure to moisture or high temperatures, which may affect the herbs’ potency

The shelf life is up to 1 year.

Where are your herbs sourced from?

Our herbs come from China's traditional growing regions, the heartlands where each ingredient has been cultivated for generations. Sourcing directly from China lets us access herbs from their authentic growing regions, where climate, soil and traditional cultivation practices all contribute to quality. It also gives us better consistency, traceability and selection than sourcing through secondary distributors or non-native growing regions.

Every herb is batch-tested and supplied with a Certificate of Analysis (COA), which verifies safety and quality, including testing for heavy metals and microbial levels. And for every herb we import into the US, the relevant documentation is submitted as part of the import process, with shipments subject to inspection or testing by US authorities to ensure they meet strict safety standards.
