A Printable Chinese Postpartum Grocery List for U.S. Households
A useful confinement grocery list starts with the soup packets and meals you have chosen, then adds only the groceries those recipes need. Count how many pots you will cook, check what is already in the kitchen, and give each fresh-food purchase a cook date. The worked example and blank sheet below help a partner or relative turn that plan into one manageable shopping trip.
Decide what the list covers
Write down the adults eating, the meals covered and the cooking method. “Two adults, soup with lunch on Tuesday and Thursday, stovetop” is specific enough to shop for. “Food for confinement” is not: it leaves the shopper guessing whether the list covers one person’s soup or every meal for the household.
Include breakfast, snacks and other meals on a separate household list. A soup packet does not automatically provide a complete day’s food. Check which dishes the recovering parent actually wants, and settle allergies or ingredient exclusions before anyone buys substitutes.
Separate packet contents from added groceries
Golden Month’s soup preparation guide gives a general stovetop starting point of one soup pack, 300–500 g of meat and 1.5 L of water. The individual packet supplies the recommended pairing. Use its current directions if they differ from the general guide.
The dried blend is already in the packet. Do not buy another set of herbs simply because you recognize them in the recipe. Write three headings:
- Already supplied: the selected soup packets and their included dried ingredients.
- Add for cooking: the protein, water and seasonings required by the specific instructions.
- For the rest of the meal: rice, vegetables or another side your household chooses.
The preparation page also lists ginger and rice wine as optional additions. Optional does not mean essential: leave them off if they are not part of your chosen recipe. An alcohol-free plan should use a recipe without alcohol rather than assuming cooking removes it all; USDA retention data show that alcohol can remain after cooking.
A worked example: two pots for two lunches
Planning assumptions: two adults will have soup as part of lunch twice. The cook has selected two chicken-paired packets and is using the stovetop method. This example chooses 400 g of chicken per pot, within the guide’s 300–500 g range. It is shopping arithmetic, not a tested recipe, a prescribed portion or a claim that soup alone meets anyone’s nutritional needs.
| Item | Per pot or meal | For two | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selected soup packets | 1 packet | 2 packets | General preparation guide; confirm chosen pairings |
| Chicken | 400 g / about 14 oz | 800 g / about 1 lb 12 oz | Chosen amount within the guide’s range |
| Water for soup | 1.5 L / about 6⅓ US cups | 3 L / about 12⅔ US cups | Stovetop guide; not a pressure-cooker amount |
| Dry rice for a side | 150 g / about 5.3 oz | 300 g / about 10.6 oz | Illustrative household choice; cook by rice instructions |
| Carrots for a separate side | 300 g / about 10.6 oz | 600 g / about 1 lb 5 oz | Illustrative household choice, not a packet addition |
The rice and carrots are simply one possible menu. Change them and the quantities to match appetite and the meals you want. Water for cooking the rice is separate from the soup water. US equivalents are rounded; use the gram and liter amounts when measuring the recipe.
Now subtract what you have. If there are 100 g of usable dry rice in the pantry, the example needs 200 g more: 300 − 100 = 200 g. You may buy a larger retail bag, but keep “amount to use” separate from “package to buy.” For chicken sold by the pound, a 2 lb package exceeds the 800 g example requirement; portion what you need and plan storage for the remainder.
Group the list by where you will shop
- Pantry: rice or noodles, the exact stock or seasoning needed, and any storage bags you are missing.
- Produce: vegetables for sides and optional fresh additions you have actually chosen.
- Protein and refrigerated food: the selected cuts, plus anything for other meals.
- Specialty items: only ingredients specifically required and wanted. Check a local store before making a separate trip.
Do not translate a meat name into a different cut on the fly. Show the butcher the packet or recipe, confirm the cut and weight, and ask the cook before substituting. A product photo is less useful than the exact recipe for this decision.
Give perishables a date and a person
Shop for shelf-stable items first if useful, then arrange the fresh-food trip near the cook date. In the example, the Tuesday portion can be bought for Tuesday’s cooking; the Thursday portion needs its own purchase or freezing plan.
For the cooked soup you intend to save, use the freezing and labeling guide to plan containers, cooling space and the reheating handoff.
USDA advises refrigerating raw chicken at 40°F or below and using it within one to two days, or freezing it. Do not buy a month’s chicken and assume it can all remain refrigerated. Thaw in the refrigerator with enough time; the counter is not a thawing plan.
Name the shopper, the cook and the person who can approve a substitution. If those are different people, send the packet photo and list before the trip. For any food allergy, the substitute brand’s label needs its own check.

Choose the soup package and confirm its instructions before finalizing the list. For the division of work beyond groceries, use our partner support guide. The shopper should leave with a short list of known items, not a responsibility to invent the menu.
