A Chinese-Style Freezer Meal Prep Menu for the Weeks After Birth

Batch-cook chicken congee and chicken-corn soup, then add fresh greens and the sides each meal needs. This Chinese-style freezer plan covers two meals for two adults, with extra congee and soup portions for later.

The recipes are from Made With Lau; Golden Month put together the shopping and helper plan. We have not tested the freezer texture, measured cooked yields or timed the combined session. Choose dishes the parent likes and use the linked recipes for the full methods.

Two meals from two batch-cooked dishes

Make one full batch each of Made With Lau’s chicken congee and chicken-corn soup. Each recipe lists four servings. Allocate two to the first meal and two as spares, adjusting containers to the amount you actually make.

Illustrated meal combinations: chicken congee with bok choy; chicken-corn soup with rice, cooked egg and bok choy.
Left: congee and greens. Right: corn soup with rice, egg and greens. Illustration of the combinations, not a tested recipe photo or serving-size guide.

Meal for two adults From the freezer Finish fresh
A: Chicken congee and greens Two of the congee recipe’s four servings; chicken and rice are in the same dish Half a batch of the bok choy recipe; chopped garnishes if wanted
B: Chicken-corn soup with rice, eggs and greens Two of the soup recipe’s four side servings Rice for two according to its package; two cooked eggs as this household’s chosen addition; the other half-batch of bok choy

Treat the corn soup as a side: its full recipe contains only 3 ounces of chicken. Meal B adds rice, eggs and vegetables. The spare soup and congee portions still need a future meal assigned to them, including any accompanying food.

Use the cooked-soup freezing and label guide to choose containers and label each portion before it gets lost in the freezer.

Freeze the base; finish the meal fresh

Try freezing and reheating a small amount before making several batches. The corn soup contains egg and cornstarch, so its texture may change. NCHFP’s soup-freezing guidance explains that freezing cannot improve the food’s original quality and that ingredients hold up differently.

From freezer portion to finished meal

Meal A: freeze ahead

Cooked chicken congee

Finish fresh

Half-batch of bok choy; optional garnishes

Meal B: freeze ahead

Cooked chicken-corn soup

Finish fresh

Rice, two cooked eggs and half-batch of bok choy

Each route serves two adults in this example. Freeze a small test portion first to check the texture.

Make half of Made With Lau’s four-serving bok choy recipe for each meal. We have kept it fresh for texture, not because cooked bok choy cannot be frozen. Buy greens close to the day you will use them.

Choose Meal B’s rice now and write down the package amounts of dry rice and water for two servings. That side is separate from the congee’s 1 rice cup, which is not a US measuring cup.

The shopping list

These amounts cover one full congee batch, one full soup batch and one bok choy batch split between the meals. Keep the recipe pages open for water amounts and methods. This is a shopping list, not a complete recipe or a nutritional prescription.

Meat, eggs and produce

  • Chicken: 15 ounces total (about 425 g). Use 12 ounces for congee and 3 ounces chicken breast for corn soup.
  • Eggs: 3. One for corn soup; two as this household’s chosen addition to Meal B. Adjust the latter to appetite.
  • Unsweetened corn: 8 ounces (about 225 g), for soup.
  • Carrot: half of one, for soup. The source gives no weight.
  • Ginger: ½ ounce (about 14 g), for congee.
  • Bok choy and garlic: 1 pound of bok choy (about 450 g) and 2 garlic cloves. Split evenly between the two fresh sides.
  • Garnishes: the congee lists 2 green onions and a piece of cilantro; the soup lists an optional ½ cup cilantro. Buy as wanted and keep separate from the freezer components.

Rice, pantry and seasonings

  • White rice: 1 rice cup for congee, plus your rice package’s amount for two side servings at Meal B.
  • Cornstarch: 9 teaspoons total. Use 2 for congee, 1 for the soup’s chicken marinade and 6 for its slurry.
  • Oyster sauce: 1 tablespoon for congee. Check its ingredients, the bouillon and other seasonings against household food restrictions.
  • Cooking oil: 4 tablespoons across the source recipes: 2 for congee and 2 for bok choy. Allow extra if your egg-cooking method needs it.
  • Salt: 3 teaspoons across the recipes: 1 for congee, 1½ for soup and ½ for bok choy. This is a shopping total; do not put it all into one pot.
  • Chicken bouillon or powder: 1½ teaspoons for congee, ½ for soup and an optional ½ for bok choy. Check each recipe and your brand’s concentration.
  • Other seasonings: 1 teaspoon white pepper and ¼ teaspoon sesame oil for soup; ½ teaspoon sugar for bok choy.

Quantities come from the linked congee, soup and bok choy recipes. The extra eggs and rice side are our planning choices. An allergy calls for checking the ingredients and preparation; omitting one sauce does not make the whole meal allergy-safe.

Plan the cooking around your equipment

  1. Clear space: check food labels, make room in the refrigerator and freezer, and gather shallow containers and a thermometer. Assign cooking and packing jobs if a helper is available.
  2. Set up safely: wash produce and measure seasonings. Keep raw chicken separate from ready-to-eat food; clean the board, utensils and work surface. Follow FoodSafety.gov’s clean, separate, cook and chill guidance.
  3. Start the congee: follow the recipe while a helper labels containers or prepares soup ingredients. Only run two pots if someone can watch both.
  4. Make the corn soup: you need a pot and a blender. With one large pot, finish and portion the congee, wash the pot, then make the soup. Check that chicken reaches 165°F; recipe minutes do not replace a thermometer.
  5. Pack as you finish: portion and refrigerate each dish promptly. Do not leave the first pot out while you finish cooking and cleaning.

Leave time for cooling and cleanup. If one session feels too much, make the dishes on different days.

Give each container a meal and a cook

Start with four shallow, freezer-rated containers for each dish: two marked “Meal A” or “Meal B” and two marked “spare.” That is eight planned containers. Their size depends on the cooked amount; use more if needed to keep portions shallow, and mark which belong together.

Write the cook, finish date and groceries still needed on the freezer list: “Soup ready; rice and greens needed; Alex cooking.” Reheat only what you plan to serve and keep the rest properly refrigerated.

Cool, store and reheat safely

Chill promptly: refrigerate cooked food in shallow portions within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. Reheat thoroughly: leftovers should reach 165°F; bring soup to a rolling boil. These are USDA food-handling rules. Our soup freezing and label guide covers the full storage workflow.
